뉴 웨이브와의 차이
원래는 펑크 락 이후에 나온 펑크 파생 장르들을 싸잡아
새로운 물결이라는 의미로 '뉴 웨이브'라고 불렀다
하지만 '뉴 웨이브'의 정의는 좀 더 말랑말랑한
신스팝 성향이 더 강한 밴드를 의미하는 것으로 옮겨갔고
한편 이런 식으로 새롭게 정의된 '뉴 웨이브'의 범주에서 벗어난 밴드는
'포스트 펑크'라는 새로운 범주에 넣기 시작했다고 한다
- 이 '포스트 펑크'는 전자음악이나 팝 성향이라기 보다는
- 좀 더 진지하고 실험적이며 어두운 분위기의
- '고딕 락'의 성향에 더 가까운 부류를 일컫게 된다
- 애초에 고딕 락 자체가 포스트 펑크의 하위 장르에 속한다
하지만 음악이라는 것 자체가 서로 간에 영향을 주고받는 일종의 큰 바다같은 것이라서
포스트 펑크와 뉴 웨이브 간에도 영향을 주고받기도 하며
뿌리가 비슷하다보니 서로 비슷한 부분이 없지않아 존재하기도 한다
- 사실 이 둘을 명확히 구별하지 않고 생각하는 경우도 많다
이후의 음악에 끼친 영향력
대중 지향적인 뉴 웨이브와는 다르게
포스트 펑크 특유의 진지하고 실험적이며
일렉트로닉한 신스팝 스타일이라기보다
기타에 좀 더 비중을 둔 스타일은
이후의 얼터너티브 락이나

- 조이 디비전의 멤버 중 하나만 없어도
- '조이 디비전'이라는 이름으로 활동하지 않기로 해서
- 일종의 후속 밴드 형태로 활동하게 되었음
초반에는 조이 디비전의 흔적이 강했다가
80년대 후반부터 발매된 싱글이
미국에서도 반향을 얻을 정도로
대중적 색채도 생겼다고 할 수 있다
- 그밖에 일렉트로니카나 이후의 팝에도
- 영향을 미쳤다는 말이 있으며
- 시드니 모닝 헤럴드에 의하면
- 심지어 브릿팝에도 영향을 미쳤다는 말도 있다
